The man himself was born in Aldershot, Hampshire in June 1948 although he spent much of his early childhood overseas as his father was a Scottish army officer. He had stints in Singapore, Germany and North Africa although he returned to the UK aged 12 years old. Initially he began his writing career with a number of short stories although very soon it became apparent he had a skill for novels which were later turned into award-winning movies.
